River Walk Trail – Junction City

Winter can be a harsh time for outdoor adventures. Sub-freezing temperatures can be a major deterrent to getting outside. On the other hand, a group trip is often just the thing everyone needs to motivate themselves. I was honestly pretty surprised when ten people showed up Saturday morning to hike the five mile River Walk trail in Junction City along the Republican River. This was basically a land-version of the paddle trip we did a couple months ago, following the same route on the north bank of the river. We started at a trailhead just down the street from the Milford Lake outlet tubes and ended at a trailhead off of Trooper Drive. The trail was made of frozen, packed gravel and was very well maintained and easy to follow. We had planned to find seven geocaches along the way, but after two we decided to just finish the trail as quick as possible and go get food somewhere warm. We drove back to Manhattan and ate a late afternoon breakfast at Early Edition.
It’s easy to spend a freezing Saturday in bed underneath the covers. I just can’t seem to do that when there are so many places to explore.
