This weekend, the adventure club continued to struggle with the harsh winter season. The much anticipated nighttime stargazing hike was called off due to cloudy skies and bad road conditions. In its place, we got together at Sheila and Kemal’s for a pizza party in which Chuck Bueter from the Michiana Astronomical Society projected the stars on the ceiling with a cool Skylab gadget.
Saturday morning, three of us loaded our bikes up and headed to Chain Reaction Bike shop in Goshen for a tune up. Chain Reaction is a donation-based volunteer-run bike shop where teaching people is more important than getting payed. The staff was friendly and we made great progress getting our bikes in shape for the spring. Another nasty storm came through that afternoon and Craig’s Swiss Valley ski trip had to be postponed to avoid the slippery roads.
Sunday morning things had calmed down enough for us to go cross-country skiing. A group of 8 took the trails from St. Patrick’s county park to Madeline Bertrand county park. Though they are in different counties, these two parks are adjacent and one can be accessed from the other via trails. Annual ski passes from either one are accepted at the other. St. Pat’s is easier to get to when the roads are snowy, which is why we chose it as our starting point.
